KBPA - 103.5 Bob FM
Sinclair Communications is the 49.9% minority owner of a five-station cluster in Austin, TX with its market partner, 50.1% majority partner Emmis Communications. However, in the case of the 103.5 signal, Sinclair managed to get the majority party (Emmis) to go along with one of its ideas with a format that had been working for Sinclair elsewhere.
By early August 2004, Sinclair had two successful Variety Hits stations on the air: one in Norfolk, VA and the other in Santa Rosa, CA. Sinclair wanted to put the format on in Austin, and on August 20, 2004, Oldies 103 (KEYI-FM) flipped to Variety Hits as 103.5 Bob FM, using the same name as Sinclair's two other Variety Hits stations. The station changed call letters to KBPA (picked to abbreviate Bob Plays Anything) on September 9, 2004.
