In Grand Rapids, MI, Clear Channel-owned Hot AC I-96 (WVTI) flipped to Variety Hits on October 18 as 96.1 Max FM.
Clear Channel moved the WMAX-FM call letters from sister station 97.3 Max FM in Chattanooga, TN to this station on November 16, 2005. It was a move that had been rumored going back to the day that the format flip took place the month before.
On March 19, 2007, the station dropped Variety Hits in favor of Hot AC, while still keeping the Max FM name. On February 4, 2008, the station changed again, going modern rock as "Radio X".
