Thunder Bay, ON, Canada
CKED/CFQK - 103.5 Larry FM
Northwest Broadcasting's Larry FM debuted in October 2004 as a simulcast on 103.5 CKED, which has a signal that hits the downtown Thunder Bay area, and 104.5 CFQK, which broadcasts to listeners outside of the urban area.
(Station changed formats on May 18, 2005)
In January 2005, CHR formatted Hot 105, owned by Newfoundland Capital Corporation, flipped to classic rock as Giant 105, leaving the area without a new music outlet. Local radio onlookers knew that it was just a matter of time before another station flipped to fill the CHR hole in the market.
On May 18, 2005, owner Northwest Broadcasting flipped Larry FM to CHR, taking the abandoned Hot FM name for itself and dropping Variety Hits after just seven months.
If anyone has more information about this situation, please send it my way. Details about Canadian stations can be very difficult to find at times, and in this case, with the Thunder Bay simulcast not listed on 100000watts.com and scarce information available online (at least as of this writing), this is all I know. What I did find out came in large part from milkmanunlimited.com.
