Wilmington, North Carolina
WILT - 104.5 Will FM
(Station changed formats on February 2, 2009)
The history of Variety Hits in the Wilmington market is a bit complicated.
Kool 98.7 (WKOO-FM) abandoned its Oldies format (following a nationwide trend) to become an Adult Contemporary station as Lite 98.7 on April 5, 2005. The NextMedia station dropped its longtime WKOO-FM call letters, becoming WILT.
The run as an AC station proved to be short-lived. On July 24, 2006, at 3 p.m. Eastern, WILT flipped to Variety Hits as 98.7 Will FM. Coincidentally, the call letters that were obtained for the Lite 98.7 format also fit the new name close enough to be retained.
On March 16, 2008, the station picked up new call letters WGLD; the WILT call letters quietly moved to the 104.5 FM signal in Wilmington. That was a prelude to what happened on March 31, 2008, where Will FM moved to the 104.5 frequency, a Class A (weaker) signal in Wilmington, with 98.7 going Spanish as "La Gran D".
In November 2008, NextMedia sold WILT to Capitol Broadcasting. On February 2, 2009, the station began stunting by playing "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles over and over. That lead up to the debut of the station's new Adult Contemporary format at 10:45 a.m. as Sunny 104.5.
