Jack FM bound for England

October 16, 2006
Jack FM is coming to England. In a major victory for the format, Absolute Radio won the rights to a new commercial FM license for the Oxford, Oxfordshire market. The license will allow Jack FM to broadcast on a main frequency of 106.8 (yes, they have even-numbered dial positions in the UK) at 500 watts and a repeater (106.4) at 250 watts.

There's no word on when 106.8 Jack FM will debut, but according to Ofcom regulations, it is expected to do so at the "earliest opportunity" and no later than two years from the awarding of the license (October 2008.)

Absolute Radio, which already owns Passion 107.9 in the market, announced that it plans to significantly reduce its costs by sharing resources between the two stations, much like what consolidation (two FMs per owner instead of just one) allowed for in the United States in the early 1990s.

To clear up any confusion, the change made by Centennial Broadcasting in the Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA market had nothing to do with Adult/Variety Hits. It moved oldies "Bob FM" to a different frequency in the market, but that Bob FM is not the same as the Bob FM that is the second-largest Variety Hits brand in the world.
